The response to a memo leaked from a White House working group on telecommunications achieved something rare in Washington—near unanimous agreement that government control of the next generation of mobile broadband is a terrible idea.
An Axios headline suggested that the Trump administration would consider “nationalizing 5G,” but that’s absurd. There is no 5G network, which means there’s nothing to nationalize. As for the spectrum that might be used, Congress effectively nationalized all radio spectrum when it passed the Radio Act of 1927.
